I raced for the front door and made it down the stairs by the third chime of the bell. I’d gotten sidetracked trying on nearly every piece of lingerie I owned—which wasn’t much—but I’d also never worn any of them for another person. That black lace two nights ago had been the first. Mirrors had been moved and selfies had been taken, all so I could figure out which one I had the guts to wear underneath my dress tonight. And now, Liam was clearly getting impatient.

The bell rang a fourth time just as I reached the hall. “Coming,” I called out.

I threw open the door, breathless.

At the sight of me, Liam’s expression transformed into shock and then pleasure. “Not yet. But you will,” he promised.

Glancing down at the red slice of fabric I’d decided to let pass for a dress, heat crept up from my toes and curled into my stomach. I grabbed his wrist and pulled him inside, slamming the door behind him. “Get in here.”

In the back of my mind, I wondered at this new confidence that had me initiating everything, but then I closed the distance between us and pressed my lips to his—shutting off all thoughts for the moment.

“What did I do to deserve this kind of greeting?” he asked, his lips still brushing over mine as he spoke.

I tipped my head back when his mouth dipped lower, clinging to his shoulders as he kissed a trail down my throat to my collarbone. “That fourth doorbell ring,” I teased, my breath coming in short gasps as he dipped lower to the cleavage already amply displayed by my dress.

“Is that right? Four rings is the siren call?”

“Yep,” I managed as his tongue dipped between my breasts.

My body jerked against him and he lifted his head so that we were eye to eye. His grin made my stomach flop. “Liam,” I began, already ready for round one. Or eight if we were still counting the last thirty-six hours.

“Dinner first,” he said. “Then dessert.”

I’d never appreciated Jess and her pouty face nearly as much as I did in this moment. My lower lip jutted out with what I prayed was sultry disappointment.

Liam chuckled. “Good Lord, that look has probably brought lesser men to their knees.” He kissed me before I could admit I’d never used it on anyone but him. That stoic chill I’d used as a mask on everyone around me was an expression I seemed to use less and less when Liam was around.

He took my hand, leading me out the front door. “Come on, gorgeous. There’s some place I want to show you.”

“Is it your bedroom?” I asked, snagging my purse and coat as I followed him out.

He laughed.

In the truck, I stared out the window as the town flew by. My tattoo itched, and I ran my finger over the gauze lightly. Just knowing it was there felt liberating. I couldn’t hide it. Not in a board room and not in a ball gown—and that’s exactly why I’d chosen that spot.
